Mineral City Village Council meeting for Aug. 25

Monday meeting KEY ACTION  Council is seeking applications for a fiscal officer and two council members. those interested in fiscal officer can contact Anita Rutledge at The Employment Source in New Philadelphia, 330-364-9777 or Mayor Rick Cain at 330-859-2015 (home) or  330-685-1716 (cell). Current fiscal officer Stacey Spillman submitted her resignation, effective Sept. 30. she has accepted another job. Council members Tim and Mindy Lee submitted their resignations, effective Aug. 30. they are moving from the village.

The fiscal officer earns $575 per month, must attend meetings and live in Sandy Township. It is a part-time position,

Council members earn $75 per meeting and must have lived in the village for one year and be a registered voter.

DISCUSSION  Steve Donant, Friends of the Library, requested the replacement of the windows in the Mineral City Nicole Donant Library. The cost to replace 16 windows  with vinyl ones is $3,520. The village agreed to pay the entire amount. Friends will donate $1,760 to the village for its portion.

OTHER ACTION

• Selected Chris Lewis as zoning inspector. he will receive $200 per month and be paid mileage. The other two applicants were Jerome Geisinger and Rich Lindsay. After an executive session, council voted 4-1 for Lewis. Mindy Lee, Tim Lee, Janice Walker and Jason Shine voted for Lewis. Brady Steinbaugh voted for Lindsay. Robert Walker was absent.

• Discussed the cat problem in the village with Jack Billow, an employee of Blasenhauer Plumbing and Heating. he wants to trap the cats and knows a shelter that will keep them. Some cats will be spayed and neutered but he doesn’t want the animals destroyed.

• Reminded residents that a 5-mill, five-year renewal levy for current expenses will appear on the November ballot. The levy collects about $26,597 annually and is used for day-to-day expenses in the village. The renewal levy will not increase property taxes.

• Approved advanced training for firefighter Jason Ely at a cost of $900 and basic fire training for Seth Moore and Spencer Lindsay at a cost of $300 each. A grant to be received at the end of the year will pay for the training.

• Approved Shawn Nelson and David Collier as volunteer firefighters.

• The library will hold a book fair from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 8 at the community park pavilion. Donations for the books will be accepted. Free hot dogs will be served.

• The fire department has received a trailer and tools valued at $116,000. The cost for the equipment was $55,000.

• The stolen village utility trailer was recovered but it has been badly damaged.

• A gazebo has been installed in the new community park at a cost of $7,200, paid from a Nature Works Grant. The village will pay a small matching fund.

• Agreed to move forward with the Lindentree Road  project. Catch basins and storm drain pipe will be installed. A grant was received for $7,500. About $13,000 from the general fund will be used for the project. The funding has been appropriated for two years.
